Stand up to China!

Here we go again with imported good from China. This time, beads in a toy called Aqua Dots made in China was made using beads that when ingested could convert into GHB, the Date Rape Drug. This is the fourth toy recall that I'm aware of from China. The other three recalls involved Mattel and paint containing dangerous amounts of lead, which can cause damage to a child's brain.

The Consumer Products Safety Commission is investigating the toy recalls and the U.S. House of Representatives are looking at the issue too. I am not currently aware of any action the Senate is taking. However, given that this is the fourth toy recall, and, Christmas is on the way, I certainly have some concerns here! Now, the conspiracy theorists out there will look at this and say "see?! The Chinese are trying to poison us and our children! It's an attempt to take our country over!" Well, I wouldn't necessarily agree that these toy recalls are related to taking our country, I think they're doing that by inundating our country with cheap good that Americans don't produce any longer because we care about getting it cheap rather than putting Americans to work. You know, basically, the concept of Wal-Mart.

Why do so many jobs go to overseas? Well, I think some of it has to do with cheaper labor costs. This likely includes the costs of benefits. On the one hand, Americans want to make a good living wage. On the other hand, how much is too much? When you factor in the benefits and retirement, how much is a good living wage? The Chinese are willing to work for much less, or at least, they seem to be satisfied with making less. Americans, however, seem ok with this in terms of getting goods that are cheaper. Well, you can't truly have it both ways. Either you want cheap, or, you want American made goods, which is it?

I'm all in favor of putting more Americans to work, however, being in favor of it is not the same thing as it actually happening. So, how does one support American products while not supporting Chinese made goods? It's way easier than you think! All you have to do is look on the package and see where it was made. If it says "Made in China" then that's a safe bet that if you don't want to support Chinese made goods, put that product down and find something made in another country. Hopefully, it'll be something made in the USA, but, probably. So, a demand must be created for American made goods. Granted, we may have to pay a bit more, but, just think of it this way. At least you're not supporting China!

And just think. Now is the perfect time not to support China! We've had 4 recalls now at least. In the latest recall, two American children have gone to the Hospital because of the date rape drug chemicals in this latest toy. How many more recalls do we have to have before Americans stand up and say "no more!" I have personally e-mailed the Washington State Senators, Patty Murray and Maria Cantwell regarding this issue. Honestly, I can't remember what they said in response, but I know it wasn't "we're not going to allow Chinese made goods in this country any more." I actually think they're "investigating" it or some crap like that. Ok, so, while it's being investigated, how many more recalls are we gonna have? How many more are we gonna tolerate?

Now, it's not reasonable to expect all Chinese goods to stop being imported at once. That's unrealistic, but, this could be the beginning of it. After all, Japan stopped allowing American beef from being exported to their country because of Mad Cow Disease. Why are we the only country in the world that will allow ourselves to have defective products, including products poisoned with lead paint on it, imported into this country from other countries? How tolerable are we supposed to be here?!

I am urging you to support American Made products and to stop buying Chinese made goods. This is more important now more than ever, particulalry considering that Christmas is coming and parents are likely to get their kids toys this year. What slogans will toy companies come up with this year I wonder? "Now! With 50% less led paint!" Might be a good year to help your kids re-discover reading.

I would urge you to e-mail, or snail mail, your Representative and Senators as well as contact the Consumer Product Safety Commission about the many toy recalls from Chinese made goods these last few months. If you demand it from your politicians, if you stop buying products made in China, if you start complaining to the retail stores that carry them, we can all make a difference. You can log onto any retail store's website and look for the "Contact us" link and send them an e-mail expressing you'd like them to stop carrying Chinese made goods, and, more American made goods. The other contact information, should you like to contact them, you can find below. Just look for something that allows you to send an e-mail to your Congress Person, or the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Let's make a difference!
